Persieds Meteor Shower

by Fiona Childs

The Perseids Meteor Shower is an annual meteor shower and this year it peaks the night of August 12-13.

Unlike the past 2 years, there should be excellent visibility with the moon at only 27% illumination.

They are best seen in the Northern Hemisphere but can be seen down to the mid-Southern latitudes.

The Perseids produce about 60 visible meteors per hour with bright, persistent trains. They will strengthen in number the later it gets.

? To view: Head out when it is fully dark outside. Set up a spot to lay down and gaze at the sky. The showers will continue throughout the night and peak just before dawn.

What I personally love about meteor gazing is the time I spend staring at our vast night sky and contemplating my little role underneath it all. It evokes a feeling of reverence and I become filled with awe and gratitude.
I hope you get to enjoy the Perseids this year!
